How to upload your content via FTP for improved performance

Updated over 4 months ago

With Photohawk, our Pro and Enterprise users have access to FTP Upload feature which allows them to upload your content via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) for faster and more reliable upload speeds. Never used FTP before? Don't worry - we'll cover everything you need to know.

Step 1 - Download your FTP client (optional - skip if already installed)

An FTP client is a piece of software that enables us to easily connect to FTP servers and copy files from our local desktop directly into a folder structure within the server.

We recommend using FileZilla, which can be downloaded from https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

Step 2 - Set up a new site within the "Site Manager"

Once downloaded and installed, open FileZilla and then open the "Site Manager" (File -> Site Manager) menu.

Within here you can create a new site and save it for later. This is especially useful if you regularly need to connect to multiple FTP servers, however it's useful to save your Photohawk FTP details for later usage.

Below are the details you will need to populate along with a screenshot of the "Site Manager" menu. Note: the alias, username and password should all be provided to you be your administrator or client prior to following these steps.

Protocol

FTP - File Transfer Protocol

Host

ftp.photohawk.com

Port

21

Username

<your email address>

Password

<your password>

HINT: The username and password fields are those that you use to log into your account via photohawk.com.

Step 3 - Connect to your site and navigate to your target FTP path

Select your site within the "Site Manager" and click connect.

Once connected, you can browse your list of available engines on the right side of your screen. These are listed under /Engines.

Files can be categorised into collections as an optional extra, but by default every engine has a default collection that can be used for all content. So if you don't have a need for multiple collections, then your upload path will be:

/Galleries/<gallery name>

However if you're categorising your content into different collections, your upload path will be:

/Galleries/<gallery name>/<collection name>

Step 4 - Upload your photos

Once you have navigated to the appropriate file path on the right of your screen, you can then navigate to the file path of your content on the left of your screen.

You can simply drag and drop from the left to the right of your screen to begin uploading files. The upload queue can be monitored in the bottom pane to check progress.
